I first read your book while I was at Texas A&M in the late 80s. I was in the Army Reserve and served on active duty in the 1st Gulf War. I have read your books so many times I have lost count. They are all great Your pictures were great as well! After all these years and all the times I read your books, I only wanted to tell you two things. You are a wonderful writer. I hope, so very much, you have found the inner peace you so greatly deserve.

Came across an old copy of Chickenhawk and couldnt put it down.

For me it brought up lots of old feelings I hadnt dealt with. Many times I found myself relating directly to the situations with much anger about how vets are often abandoned by those they fought for. Its pathetic that so many do-gooders judged returning vets so harshly.

Thanks Mr Mason, only the vets of any war really know what happened.

Dear Bob,
I think that I must have read Chickenhawk at least five times. It is a great book and it inspired me to learn to fly a helicopter, (only an R22), one of these days I would love to fly a huey!
I also recently visited Vietnam with my wife and teenage daughters, travelling from South to North. It is a fascinating country.
Would it be possible to get you to sign a copy of the book?
Kind regards,
Nick.

Hi Mr Mason,

Just read Chickenhawk for the 6th time whilst on holiday, I always take it and enjoy it every time I pick it up....

It is one of the best books I have read regarding what it was really like in a theatre of war, I have no comprehension of what it must have been really like for you guys but your book helps, respect to you and the others who have thought so bravely for their country, no matter what they actually think is right or wrong with what they are doing....

Thank You..

Dear Mr. Mason,
I just finished reading your 2005 edition of Chickenhawk and just wanted to tell you that I really enjoyed it. I felt like I was in the cockpit the entire time. As you mention in your afterward it is highly regarded as a must read for any aspiring pilot. I've got a few hours in an R22 and still dream of completing my rotary pilots license in the future. For now I'll have to settle on reading great books such as Chickenhawk.
Thank you,
Matt

Just finished your book, it is a truely fantastic book, and tells you what the war was really like and the problems you and needless to say the countless other vets had on there return.

I finished reading the 2005 release of "Chickenhawk". Its a very good book about the Vietnam war. Your book along with others about the Vietnam war helps to show how the war was mismanaged by LBJ and Westmoreland.

Mr. Mason,

Fantastic Story! I am glad to hear Patience stuck with you, God Bless her!

I had a very good friend who was a Helicopter Medic in '71 and '72 I believe. He said many of the same things you did.

The afterward is great also.

How can I find a copy of "Flightline: The Army Helicopter Pilots of Vietnam"

I woud love to see this.

Thank you for your courage under fire. You are a true man.

Dear Bob,
Phenomenal book. Your bravery and humility can not be described in words. I couldn't put the book down and was absolutely stunned by what you had to deal with on a daily basis. Thank you for your selfless service and telling this phenomenal story. It's a tragedy that you had to deal with the things that you did when you returned to the States- shame on our government for not treating our vets with the respect they deserve.
Best regards,
Thomas Gerecs, CFI

Yep, 25 years after you wrote Chickenhawk I read it in a couple of days. Excellent! Written from the heart and involving enough that I had to find out what happen to you afterwards - and now I know! What shocks me is not that you have managed to get your life back on track but that you wrote Weapon! I read that years ago! Stiil have it and read it again recently. Bob, all I can say is you are a great achiever and worthy of all the praise. And no I don't fly but I've had lessons in a R22.

Bob,
I just finished reading "Chickenhawk". I have lost track of how many times I have read it. I have given away and loaned quite a few copies. I was in Pleiku, Dak To, An Khe, Cheo Reo area '68-'69 as a combat engineer. Reading your book feels like going home. Thanks for your service and writing that book. I also have "Back in the World". I would love to play you a game of chess through e-mail.
