Please visit americanhuey369.com. I finished reading Chickenhawk last night and belive you will find many comrades involved in this veteran healing project. I know the men and women dedicated to this Huey are truely patriots who believe in America and the servicemen and women who have served and are serving in the armed forces. Having met a LZ Xray survivor this weekend at the Howard County Vietnam Veterans Reunion was a profound privilege.

Respectfully,

Ed

Mr Mason,

I first read Chickenhawk in 1986 and have read it many times since. The book proved to be very powerful and so much so, I wrote you a letter in 1988 to which you responded. For an 18 year old kid, receiving that correspondence from you was Xmas. Your final sentence of Chickenhawk still sticks in my mind and the book will always be one of my favourites.

I have nothing but respect for you and all those who served in Vietnam. I hope you and family are well.

I found Chickenhawk in the military clothing sales store at Ft. Belvoir. Your story was eye-opening. I served in the artillery 09/66 to 09/67 and wondered how pilots did their job around hot LZs. Now I know. Thanks. I didn't expect the PTSD aspect but clearly should have. You and your wife have provided a significant service by becoming involved. I will recommend your site to past members of my unit who are still suffering from PTSD. Thanks again.

I was a crewmember in the 201st "Red Barons" and also in the 180th ASHC "Big Windy" toward the end of the war. I've read Chickenhawk and I appreciate the no holes barred writing, people don't know how it really was. Also, thank Patience for me for her book, it's helped me understand my own PTSD problems even if I haven't learned to cope with them yet. God bless you both!

After reading your book I am really concerned that the way the Air Cav is portrayed in the movie Apocalypse Now is very disrespectful. What do others think?
An Australian author and veteran Barry Heard has written a book titled 'Well done Those Men' which is from the heart like 'Chickenhawk' and I suggest people may also find it inspiring and confronting like Chickenhawk. He was not a Pilot but a radio operator in an Australian Infantry Platoon

Why hasn't Chickenhawk been made into to Hollywood blockbuster, yet? There must be enough material in Mason's memoir for at least a trilogy.

I first read your book while I was at Texas A&M in the late 80s. I was in the Army Reserve and served on active duty in the 1st Gulf War. I have read your books so many times I have lost count. They are all great Your pictures were great as well! After all these years and all the times I read your books, I only wanted to tell you two things. You are a wonderful writer. I hope, so very much, you have found the inner peace you so greatly deserve.

Came across an old copy of Chickenhawk and couldnt put it down.

For me it brought up lots of old feelings I hadnt dealt with. Many times I found myself relating directly to the situations with much anger about how vets are often abandoned by those they fought for. Its pathetic that so many do-gooders judged returning vets so harshly.

Thanks Mr Mason, only the vets of any war really know what happened.

Dear Bob,
I think that I must have read Chickenhawk at least five times. It is a great book and it inspired me to learn to fly a helicopter, (only an R22), one of these days I would love to fly a huey!
I also recently visited Vietnam with my wife and teenage daughters, travelling from South to North. It is a fascinating country.
Would it be possible to get you to sign a copy of the book?
Kind regards,
Nick.

Hi Mr Mason,

Just read Chickenhawk for the 6th time whilst on holiday, I always take it and enjoy it every time I pick it up....

It is one of the best books I have read regarding what it was really like in a theatre of war, I have no comprehension of what it must have been really like for you guys but your book helps, respect to you and the others who have thought so bravely for their country, no matter what they actually think is right or wrong with what they are doing....

Thank You..

Dear Mr. Mason,
I just finished reading your 2005 edition of Chickenhawk and just wanted to tell you that I really enjoyed it. I felt like I was in the cockpit the entire time. As you mention in your afterward it is highly regarded as a must read for any aspiring pilot. I've got a few hours in an R22 and still dream of completing my rotary pilots license in the future. For now I'll have to settle on reading great books such as Chickenhawk.
Thank you,
Matt

Just finished your book, it is a truely fantastic book, and tells you what the war was really like and the problems you and needless to say the countless other vets had on there return.
