Hi Bob. Just finished reading Chickenhawk a second time. Absolutely incredible! I'm going through final pilot selection phase now for the Royal New Zealand Air Force, so I was particularly interested in your descriptions of the Huey's and how they fly. Our Air Force is still using the Huey's we bought off the US after Vietnam so I guess I'll get to learn their characteristics just as you did! There is no Huey pilot I know of in the RNZAF that hasn't read Chickenhawk.

Dear Bob,
I have read ChickenHawk twice now, and each time I get something new out of it. My father was a slick pilot in Vitenam in '71, he made it back in one piece thankfully. I have purchased the updated book with new afterword, and I was wondering if I could send it to you to have it signed. My buddy is a Dust Off pilot in Afghanistan right now with the 101st, and I would like to send it to him. Please let me know if you would sign the book and where I should send it to. Thank you!

Hi Bob,
I read chickenhawk about 15yrs ago and the memories of it are still vivid. Its a book i found hard to put down once i started reading and to this day still the best book i've ever had the pleasure to read. I had tears many times, some of laughter some of sadness, but i suppose the best part of the book was the end knowing you got out and put your experience's on paper for all of us to enjoy.. having said that, i really wanted to say its been a pleasure flying with you, take care. Tom

Hi Bob,
Glad to see you and Patience doing well.
I am on my second copy of Chickenhawk, and have probably read it a dozen times.

I don't know if you have ever gotten into flight simulation, but there is an excellent website for Helicopter simulation called Hovercontrol you should check out.
Check out the Dodosim forum to see the awesome Huey there are developing.
Just wondering if you ever returned to Vietnam with Patience?
At any rate, thanks for your service and your books.

Gman

Every time I pick up "Chickenhawk," I end up re-reading it. After having read it for the sixth or seventh time, I'm glad to have found your website. It seems like I am emotionally affected every time I read it, and I would like to thank you for providing such a candid view of a war I am too young to remember.

Hi Robert, I only got into reading books a couple of years ago, never really found time till then (now 59) I was a Naval reservist from 1972 till 1988, marine engineer R.N.X.S Just read a copy of Chickhawk, many thanks for sharing this experience with us, I can't begin to imagine what you all went through, especially with some of the shit you received back home! The last bit in the book says that you were in deep shit with the authorities! Glad to see all went well! Good luck to you mate!

I recently attended the Robinson Safety Course and our instructor, Bob Muse, mentioned Chickenhawk as 'required reading' for helicopter pilots. I'm glad he did - just finished it and the book is absolutely incredible. Answered a lot of my questions about what it was like to fly helicopter in Vietnam.

Not a day goes by that I don't pick up your book Chickenhawk and reread something. My Dad served in Vietnam in 67-68 and lord knows he had his problems as well. He was also blessed like you with a wonderful wife who stuck by him through the bad times that like yours turned back into good times. Unfortunately he passed away 3 years ago this coming July. I am an ER nurse in San Antonio and I never fail to thank and welcome home the RVN vets that I run across.
THANK YOU AND WELCOME HOME!!
Kevin

I finished Chickenhawk last night after reading most of it on holiday in majorca (airport purchase!). It was an amazing read and a very moving ending. It was also fascinating to look at the photos on your web site which bring the story to life. I am glad that things appear to have improved for you - you deserve it. I also have a fascination with helicopters but have never done anything about it.

I live on a sailboat and got an old copy of Chickenhawk from a man living in Cartagena. I just finished it and was extremely moved by your story and your excellent writing. I'm from the Viet Nam era (soon to be 62). I was fearful of reading about the actual battles so never did until now. I lost too many friends there. I knew the history and later became very much against the war. I want my children to read it. You & Patience are two of my heroes. So very glad to see you're doing well.

Mr. Mason:

I picked up Chickenhawk when it first came out, and have read it several times during the intervening years. I recently enjoyed the audio CD and the narrator did a VERY good job, besides some minor issues ("pulling the lanyard on the canyon" - instead of cannon).

I've always wondered what Jack thought of the book, and whether you discussed your experiences in Vietnam with him.

I hope you feel you've been welcomed home & no longer flawed.

Sincerely,

Mike
